America: Speeding down Wall Street & off the cliff while applying lipstick in the rearview mirror.

The fact that Elizabeth Arden stocks surged giving credence to the Lipstick Indicator:

“This term was coined by Leonard Lauder (chairman of Estee Lauder), who consistently found that during tough economic times, his lipstick sales went up. Believe it or not, the indicator has been quite a reliable signal of consumer attitudes over the years. For example, in the months following the September 11 terrorist attacks, lipstick sales doubled.”

U.S. Stocks Fall as Jobless Claims Cast Doubts on Recovery

U.S. stocks fell, sending the
Standard & Poor’s 500 Index to the biggest three-day decline
since July 1, after an unexpected rise in unemployment claims
added to evidence the recovery is weakening.

“There’s renewed fear about the economic recovery rolling
into a double-dip” recession, said Henry Smith, chief
investment officer at Haverford Trust Co., which manages $6.2
billion in Radnor, Pennsylvania. “We had Cisco’s comments about
the second half and we had jobless claims rising when we
expected a fall. All of this is weighing on investors’ concern
about whether the recovery can transition into a sustainable
expansion.”

“The data points we got today reinforced the negative
psychology that has gripped the market over the last few
months,” said Matthew Kaufler, a money manager at Federated
Clover Investment Advisors in Rochester, New York, which manages
$3 billion. “Economic life in total is going to be more
challenging over the next half year than what we previously
expected.”

Elizabeth Arden Inc. advanced 11 percent to $16.04 for the
biggest gain in Russell 2000 Index. The maker of perfumes and
cosmetics posted fourth-quarter profit excluding some items of
13 cents a share, beating the 2-cent average estimate from
analysts in a Bloomberg survey.
